Bangkok is a large vibrant metropolis, its official population of 8 million boosted by an estimated 4-5 million migrant workers who live and work here but who are registered in other provinces.

Locally known as “Krungthep” or “Krungthep Mahanakorn”, the city’s only definable center would be the administrative and historical area of Rattanakosin. Most visitors tend to stay in the Siam, Silom/Sathorn, Pratunam, and Sukhumvit areas due to the plentiful supply of good hotels, and accessabilty via the Skytrain and Bangkok Metro.

Main Sights

Grand Palace

The city’s most important sights are grouped in Rattanakosin.
Access is best by Chao Phrya Express Boat to the Tha Chang pier. Here you’ll find the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Pra Kaew) inside the stunning Grand Palace, and just behind there is Wat Pho, with its imposing Reclining Buddha. This temple is also the home of the country’s most famous traditional massage school.

In front of the Grand Palace lies Sanam Luang, a large open ground used for Royal Cremations and other public events. Seasonal kite flying and political rallies are also held here.

With your back to the Grand Palace facing Sanam Luang, on your left is Thammasat University, one of the country’s finest educational institutions. Just past that is the fascinating National Museum housed in the old Second King’s Palace. Apart from many interesting historical artifacts dating back to pre-historic times, the building is also home to the Royal Funeral Carriages used in all Royal Funerals.

The main road leading away in front of you is Rachadamneon Avenue (Royal Avenue). A stroll along the right hand side of this wide boulevard will give you glimpses of old traditional shop houses in some of the side streets. Continuing along, you will come to the Democracy Monument, celebrating the beggining of parliamentary democracy in Thailand.

Walking further on, on the right hand side, the “Metal Temple” appears, a completely unique Buddhist structure. Opposite, you can see the Golden Mount, well worth the steep climb for views across the city.
